South Valley Journal Article and I really should take my own advice.

Wow, I haven't posted here forever. A lot has happened over the last couple of years. I am still on my fitness journey. I have gained a lot of weight back this year due to illness, stress and not working as hard as I should.

Sometimes I have to read back at what I have accomplished over the years to motivate myself to keep going. I feel like the Fit to Fat to Fit guy except my Journey has been Fit to Fat to Fit to Fat and now working on the Fit again!

If you didn't get a chance to read this article last year, here it is. I hope it can help someone else keep going and not give up on this life long fitness journey.

Wow, what a year 2012 was for me! 2011 was really the year I focused on reaching my weight-loss goals, and 2012 was the year I focused on reaching my education goals to become a fitness instructor and a personal trainer. In 2012 I also purchased a small fitness studio, Studio Azul, with a couple of my friends and I look forward to keeping this studio up and running so people near the studio have a place to escape to and stay fit and happy!

In November 2012 I was hired on at JL Sorenson Recreation Center as a fitness instructor sub and in January 2013 I got my own Kids on the Move class that I teach on Mondays and my own TRX class that I teach every other Fridays. I also was hired on a couple weeks ago as a Personal Trainer at JL. I  have a couple of clients so far and I am beyond excited to be able to help others. I also get so excited & nervous when I get a call to sub a class but I love it so much. I subbed my first Zumba class the other day, it was so much fun, the class of 53 had so much energy!

I just want to thank everyone who has supported me every step and for all the love and encouragement. I know it could be a little strange for some who have watched me lose my weight and transform on the outside, but I am still the same person on the inside. I have tried my hardest to stay the same Jena and at the same time have tried to improve some of my flaws. I am busier now, even though I have always been a busy person, but I am still me, I am still Jena and I always make time for friends. Friendships are really important to me and I really focus a lot of my energy to keeping up with friendships. I feel like through this journey I have made so many great new friends, strengthened a lot of old wonderful friendships, & sadly I feel like I have lost some friends along the way for unknown reasons to me, and to them I say I love you and I am sorry for whatever I have done to push you away, I am still here with open arms and an open heart and great memories.

I hope I have not come across as conceded or better than others because if anything, this experience has humbled me, has taught me so much about myself and about others who struggle and have issues with weight, hormones, self-image, self-esteem, self-worth. I hope I can help others go through their own fitness journeys without having to jump through as many hoops as I did.

Thanks for reading, I love comments and feedback and if you want to contact me privately you are welcome to email me at . I am still taking on clients and would love to help you reach your fitness goals, whatever they may be!

One important thing I hope you can take from this post is to take care of yourself first so you can take care of those around you. We tend to do the oposite and it is time to stop, be a little selfish and take care of yourself so you can exist and be here for those that love you!

Stay fit and be happy! Here's to 2013!

It's been awhile!

Wow, this year is going by too fast. Just wanted to give a quick update. Last week I re-took my personal trainer test for the 3rd time, 3rd time is the charm right? I should know by the end of next week if I passed!

Today I auditioned for spin class instructor, I taught the first half of class and it was a great experience. I was so nervous but as soon as I started my music and using the mic for the first time, things just fell into place and now I know without a doubt this is what I want to do! I got a lot of great feedback from people who were in class, I feel like it went great! I hopefully will be able to get on the sub-list to start.

Thanks for stopping by, I hope to start dedicating time to writing on here again, thanks for your support and patience!

Keep moving!

Red Rock Relay: Zion

Three years ago I ran my first relay race, Red Rock Relay Zion, with Team Herriman Hotties. I was already in the middle of my weight loss journey but I was struggling with losing weight, I didn't know I had PCOS or Insulin Resistance at the time but I was eating right and exercising all the time.

This wonderful group of Women let me be part of this amazing team, they loved and accepted me how I was and cheered me on, every step of the way. I was runner # 4 with a total of 18.5 miles to complete over 3 runs in 24 hours time. I had the best time running with these women in this beautiful relay race across Southern Utah that started at Brian Head Ski Resort and Finished at Zion's National Park.

Herriman Hotties has had several different runners over the years due to people needing to drop off the team for various reasons. In total, there are 21 Herriman Hottie Alumni, and we all have a very strong bond. I love each of these women, they all inspire me, motivate me and make me want to be a better person.

I want to say a big thank you to my team, the Herriman Hotties, the Red Rock Relay Peeps, and all the teams that participate in the RRR every year. You have all been so kind and supportive and even though I was 100 pounds heavier, I never was treated differently than any other Athlete. Thank you....

I ran the same legs every year and would love to share my time improvements over the years. The legs changed slightly but the mileage always ended being close to the same:

Indoor Cycling Cert!

Yesterday I had the opportunity to take my Indoor Cycling Certification. It was an awesome day taught by Schwinn Master Trainer Denise Druce. I loved the way she taught us how to be awesome Indoor Cycling Instructors, she was very motivating and inspiring. Her two indoor cycling rides that she taught us yesterday were mentally amazing, she really tapped into our brains and I got a little emotional on both rides. These are experiences I will never forget. Thank you...

We had such a fun group of girls that made the day go by pretty fast. I made friends with a couple women that I know will be lifelong friends. I can't wait to start teaching something that I have a huge passion and love for.

Keep Moving!

Another First and it Won't be the Last!

On July 21st I competed in my first Sprint Triathlon. I set this goal last year and I can't believe it has already come and gone. I will just tell you now what a great experience this was. I was overwhelmed with emotion right before I got into the pool. The swim went by a lot faster than I thought. I had a few moments where it got a little crowded but overall it was a great experience, even with swimming being my weak event. The bike portion was so great, I knew I could make up a lot of time here. The first 6 miles was all uphill but it was fun, for some sick reason, I love hill climbs on my bike. Then the run, the first minute or two was hard getting my legs going but I warmed up quick and kept a good pace until the very end. I feel so lucky to know so many great people who work at the rec center that put on this triathlon and it was great seeing all their faces, hearing their voices cheer me on, it was an amazing experience.

Here are my official times:

  • The swim- 400 yards in 11:41
  • The bike portion- 12.4 miles in 49:46.
  • The run- 5k in 31:38
  • Total time combined 1:37:32

I placed 6th in the Women! I was so excited and feel so lucky to be able to have the strength and energy to be able to accomplish this goal. I had so many friends come watch and cheer me on, along with my Husband and my two daughters. I just want to say thank you so much, your support means the world to me, I love you all so much.

After the adult Triathlon I watched the kids triathlon and I just want to say congrats to all of these young athletes. I am so proud of each and every one of them. Madeleine, you go girl and never stop, you are amazing and you can do anything you set your mind to do, thank you for your example!

I can't believe the journey I have been on for the last 6 years. If you would have asked me 6 years ago if I would ride a road bike, or swim 16 laps in the pool I would have not seen it coming, that is for sure. Here I am, 6 years later, almost 100 pounds lighter and now I am a triathlete!

Thanks to all my TTT girls and friends who continue to cheer me on and inspire me everyday. I keep you all in my heart, thank you for your examples and for being you.

Anything is possible, never forget that!
